Since the emergence of Chinese independent films over thirty years ago, numerous outstanding authors and works have emerged despite the extremely narrow and difficult creative conditions and environment. Many of these authors and works have gained worldwide acclaim due to their imaginative, independent, and distinct perspectives in art creation, cultural reflection, and social observation and criticism.
However, due to specific social historical periods and unique cultural and political environments, these works have difficulties entering society for direct communication with audiences, thus failing to reflect their significant artistic, cultural, and social values.
The establishment of the "Chinese Independent Film Exhibition" aims to establish a link and communication space for these excellent film works to communicate directly with the audience and reflect their unique values.
In the past, the screening and communication of Chinese independent films overseas were mainly realized through limited channels such as participating in different film festivals, thematic screening activities of cultural and art institutions, and academic seminars and screenings of schools and academic research institutions. Therefore, the audience's understanding of Chinese independent films was mostly partial and one-sided, making it difficult to form a systematic understanding of Chinese independent films.
The Chinese Independent Film Exhibition aims to provide a systematic introduction to the important content and development process of the Chinese independent film field. It intends to enable the audience to understand the authors and works of Chinese independent films more systematically, and to understand the history, environment, and real situation of the development of Chinese independent films at different times.
自中国独立电影出现以来，至今已逾三十多年，期间虽然创作的条件和环境异常逼仄艰难，但仍然涌现了大批引人注目的优秀作者及作品，甚至有许多作者和作品已享誉世界。
这些作者及其作品，无论是在艺术的创作上，于文化的思考上及对社会的观察和批判上，大都极具自由的想象、独立的精神和鲜明的立场。但因圉于特定的社会历史时期和特殊的文化政治环境，这些作品难于正常地进入社会与观众进行直接的面对与交流，因此也无法体现其重要的艺术文化及社会历史价值。
“中国独立电影展”的举办即期望在此之间建立一条联结的纽带和交流的空间，以期这些优秀的电影作品得以在和观众直接交流的同时亦使其特殊的价值得以体现。
以往，中国独立电影在海外放映交流多是通过参加不同的电影节、文化艺术机构的主题性放映活动以及学校和学术研究机构的学术性研讨放映等有限的渠道来实现，故观众们对中国独立电影的了解大多较为局部、片面，难以形成对中国独立电影全貌的系统认识和了解。
中国独立电影展，即期望以系统性的介绍中国独立电影领域的重要内容和发展过程，以使观众可以更加系统地认识中国独立电影的作者和作品，了解中国独立电影发生和发展的历史、环境以及不同时期的真实面貌和状况。

In China, due to political, cultural, and other factors, independent film creation has faced certain challenges.
